1650's French Canadian Gray Dress with Linens

This Gray twill and white linen dress was made for Canadian writer Joanna Emery to wear to readings of "Caring for a Colony: The Story of Jeanne Mance."

The costume consists of six pieces. The bodice is fully lined and heavy boned, complete with the square neckline typical of the period. The bodice is bound at the bottom with the same fabric. It closes up the back with a metal zipper (one of the few modern elements on the costume). The sleeves and very full and linen cuffs snap onto the sleeves for easy cleaning. Over the square neckline is a double layered linen collar with front tie. The Skirt is box pleated into a waistband. The dress is finished off with a linen cap.
